For now they gotta believe us, for now they gotta believe us, for now they gotta believe ussss... For we have won the cup!!!
After their 3-2 victory over Boo IF, the Colorado Rush are champions of the GU15 age group at the Gothia Cup. Rush's Brittney Stark started the scoring off early in the first half, when she pounced on a loose ball in the box, and buried it in the back of the net. Boo answered back with a goal of their own a few minutes later. A nifty combination at the top of the box freed up a Boo striker who slotted her shot under a diving Sabrina Macias to level the score at 1's. Brittney Stark gave Rush the lead again when she followed up Gabbi Miranda's blast from 25 yards out. Stark completed her hat trick just before half. Kerri Marquadt got on the end of a Ashely Mages' cross and hit the cross bar with her shot. Stark was there to clean up the rebound as she headed it in from close range.
The second half saw a few good chances from both sides. Boo hit the cross bar from a long range shot midway through the second half. In the final minute, Boo converted a pk on a questionable foul in the box. Rush killed off the final minute of the game and came away with a 3-2 victory sending the players and fans into a frenzy!
Brittney Stark was selected MVP of the match after scoring three goals.
"Oh When the Rush," could be heard throughout the city, as the girls were taken away from the stadium on a convertible bus and driven all around town.
Coach Wes Hart had this to say after the game, "The atmosphere was awesome. Great stadium. Live TV. Replays on jumbo tron. It was cool! After the game, they paraded us around the city in a convertible bus and we did all the Rush chants throughout the city. All the people on the streets would cheer for us as we went by. Random people would come up and ask for photos of the girls. They were treated like pros!"
Picture of the game, the celebration, and players' comment will be available soon.
Rush Girls Headed to Gothia Cup Final
After 9 games, 500 minutes, 47 goals for, and 0 against, the Rush girls are headed to the Finals of the Gothia Cup! After a dramatic last second goal to launch them into the Semi Finals, the Rush defeated Ifo Bromolla IF to secure their place in Saturday's Final. Betsy Brandon got Rush on the board when she calmly slotted a left footed shot past the Bromolla gk. Early in the second half, Rush's Kayla Latham finished a Jordan Di Biasi cross from close range, to make it 2-0. It was Latham's first goal of the tournament. She was the last Rush player to score a goal (all 16 players have now scored) and it could not have come at a better time. Rush's third goal was acutally put in by a Bromolla defender, after a hard run through the box by Brittney Stark. Ashely Mages finished the scoring off, when she converted a Betsy Brandon cross of of a short corner. Rush's defense, anchored by captain Julia Thurston, was stingy once again, as they allowed very few chances on goal.
Rush will face Boo FF (Sweden) in the Final, which will kick off at 11 am (3 am MST).
