CO 14 ECNL Qualify for Nationals
On Monday, May 20th, there was a decisive U14 ECNL game played at Englewood High School between the Colorado Rush and Real Colorado. After hours of administrative work between the two clubs, the teams were finally able to square off in this ECNL derby match. To add to the exciting drama, the result of this game would hold one team out of ECNL Nationals and advance the other on.
Sofia Weiner, who was slated to be on a bus ride to Moab, UT for her end-of-the-year 8th grade trip, netted a goal early to put the Rush out in front. (Weiner and her team will probably be happy she stayed for the game.) Shelby Unruh provided the service ahead of Weiner’s clinical finish. It was technique straight out of The Center training. Mike Piserchio, Director of the Center Program, would be proud.
After a half of Rush-style soccer attacking through small passes and finding open spaces to play in, the Rush entered half time up 1-0. Despite all types of weather in the game and a storm of second half long-ball attacks from Real, the Rush girls ground out a determined 1-0 victory.
Weiner (picture celebrating with teammates after her goal) was named Player of the Match. We tried to catch up with her following the game, but she was into her vehicle and on the road too quickly. Some say she was off to Moab, but a few of her teammates were overheard talking about how she is “very camera-shy.”
The U14 Colorado Rush girls now advance on to ECNL Nationals in Richmond, VA later this summer.
