Rush Boys Take 8th in Portugal
The boys met for the first time in Boston on Tuesday June 5th. The boys trained on Wednesday and Thursday to prepare for the event. On Wednesday former Director of Coaching Education of US Youth Soccer Tom Goodman took part of the training session. Later that evening the boys had a scrimmage against a local team up an age group. The group were due to fly out on Thursday evening but the flight was delayed to Friday morning.
On arrival the boys were picked up by a team bus with the Rush logo on it then driven to an ocean front hotel which we would be residing in with Barcelona and PSG!
Saturday was the first day of competition where the boys played eventual champions SL Benfica and were beaten handily. The boys won their next game 1-0 vs Pauleta Academy B team putting them into the 5th through 8th play-off game.
Sunday's games were played against Pauleta Academy A which was lost 7-0 and then we were beatan 8-1 vs Porto.
Sunday evening saw the Rush boys teach all 12 teams at the tournament the "We are Rush" song which was live on Portuguese Television and went viral. The boys ended up finishing 8th at the event and won the "Fair Play Award". The boys were invited back the following year as they captured the hearts of everyone they came in contact with. We are currently working with Pauleta to set up an international camp for players aged 12-16 for boys and girls. Rush, PSG, Barcelona and Benfica as well as other clubs will be involved in the camp targeted for next summer.
On Monday the boys went to town hall and met the Mayor and were accompanied by Pauleta and his staff and all joined in the "We are Rush" song!
Here is what one parent said about the trip.
"THE BOYS!!!!! I have been around many teams but have never seen a group get together so quick with such amazing care for each other. I am really proud of these young men on many levels, they represented RUSH and the USA so well. Teammates for life."
The staff consisted of head Coach Luis Cabral and assistants Rich Daestrela (known as Frenchy) Boys Director of Coaching for New England Rush, and newly appointed Youth Director fo Coaching at Virginia Rush Chris Panayiotou.
